FEEDING

What are the benefits of feeding straw to your dairy herd?

Feeding straw to dry dairy cows has become a popular strategy to decrease dietary energy content and increase the bulk fill of the ration. The key reasons for doing this are to maintain pre-calving dry matter intake and to keep the rumen expanded to avoid a displaced abomasum post calving.

In addition to the dry cow diet more, and more producers are finding a place for it in the milking cow rations. Straw is being fed to lactating cows to add physically effective neutral detergent fibre (peNDF) to the ration. Physically effectice NDF is defined specifically as the fraction of fibre that stimulates chewing and contributes to the floating mat of large particles in the rumen.

Being based in the SW this is by far our most popular operation

Since the introduction of this service it has allowed our clients to feed greater quantities of straw into the milking and dry cow ration (some in excess of 8kg/day for the latter!). Due to the consistent chop length achieved only from a tub grinder it allows for easy mixing into a TMR. Our service will save you several hours a week of downtime trying to chop straw through your conventional chopper or more commonly diet feeder that will generally produce an inferior product.

Cows fed hammer milled straw will get the amount you desire as it mixes well and due to this they are unable to sort this in the trough. Straw is no longer a cheap bi-product and due to its importance in the ration knowing how to utilise this commodity efficiently will lead to greater results.

BEDDING

POULTRY BEDDING

By equipping our Grinder with fine screens we can produce some of the most absorbent poultry bedding on the market.

All sorts of straw can be used for poultry bedding but we recommend miscanthus, rape or wheat. A blend of wheat Straw and either rape Straw or miscanthus is a unique product with excellent absorbency characteristics.

Miscanthus and rape Straw both have a very absorbent pith in the centre of the stem, this true potential can only be released once it’s been hammer milled and the end result is a bedding that is unbelievably soft to the touch. The central pith in the stem plays two roles, one for absorbency and the second as an insulant which proves to keep birds warmer than conventional wood shavings. It is these two main characteristics that makes this product stand above the rest.

Straw based Bedding with an average moisture content of 12% is an excellent base to start absorbing moisture from droppings and water drinkers. With an ability to maintain its condition right through the cycle, good qualities reducing ammonium production and bacterial growth in the bed.

A very popular service processing mainly wheat straw to a very fine grade delivering excellent results to many of our customers for several years now.

If required we can supply miscanthus or rape Straw to be used on its own or mixed with wheat straw. The advantages of these products is that they have a very absorbent pith in the centre of the stem. This true potential can only be released once it’s been hammer milled and the end result is a bedding that is unbelievably absorbent and soft to the touch.

AD FEEDSTOCK

A tub grinder can be the ultimate tool to accompany an AD plant. We have previously processed the following products:

• Swedes
• Parsnips
• Fodder beet
• Straw
• Wholecrop
• Haylage
• Veg waste

With products like fodder beet and swede the tub grinder turns them into a product with a slurry like consistency which is excellent for pumping and energy release.

Quite often some AD feedstock is available seasonally so hiring in the tub grinding service is an excellent way to make use of these products.
